How to Make Dinner Rolls

Dinner Rolls

I don’t know about you but I think homemade dinner rolls beat any store bought bread! They’re fresh, yeasty and oh so fluffy! I love brushing them with melted butter when they come right out of the oven.

This would be the perfect time to make these for the upcoming holidays. Honestly these would be a great addition to any dinner night. They’re simple to make but you have to let them rise twice. So you’ll need to make sure you start making them a couple hours before you serve dinner.

During the holidays my family and friends know these will be making it on the dinner table and these are gone so fast! This year I get to teach one of my close friends how to make them so she can make them every holiday she wants!

That’s why I love cooking and sharing recipes. It brings friends and family together and being able to teach people how to cook or bake is something that brings me so much joy.

I’m excited for you to get in your own kitchen and make these delicious dinner rolls!

What are Dinner Rolls?

Dinner Rolls are small, individually baked breads served along with a meal, typically during dinner time.

How to Make Dinner Rolls

Ingredients

  • 3 ¾  cups of flour
  • 1 package of rapid rise yeast (7 grams/ ¼ oz package)
  • ⅓ cup sugar
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • ⅓ cup butter
  • 1 egg yolks
  • 2 tbsp melted butter, to brush on top after baking

Preparation

1) In a small saucepan, add the milk and butter and warm it just enough until the butter melts (use a candy thermometer to make sure the mixture reaches 120 degrees.)

2) In the bowl of a standing mixer fitted with a dough hook, add the warm butter and milk mixture and sprinkle the yeast over the top. Let it sit for 5 minutes. If your milk/butter mixture is too hot it will kill the yeast and if it’s too cold it won’t activate the yeast. If you don’t have a thermometer just make sure it’s nice and warm and not scorching hot.

3) Give the yeast mixture a quick mix then add the flour, sugar, egg yolk and salt and mix on low just until the flour is incorporated. Then increase the speed to medium high and knead dough for about 5 – 7 minutes or until you have a smooth dough.

4) Lightly grease a bowl with some oil and set aside.

5) Form dough into a ball and place it seam side down in the oiled bowl making sure to brush a little oil on top and the sides so it doesn’t form a crust. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and place it somewhere warm for about an hour or until it has almost doubled in size.

6) Lightly grease a 9X13” baking dish with either butter or cooking spray and set aside.

7) Dump the dough onto a lightly floured surface and deflate it. Cut the dough into 12 equal pieces.

8) Take each piece of dough and shape it into a ball. Place the ball seam side down in the greased baking dish

9) Once you have all the rolls in the baking dish, cover them with a lint free kitchen towel and let them sit in a nice warm place for about an hour.

10) Preheat the oven to 375 degrees

11) Once the rolls have risen, bake them for about 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown. Using a pastry brush, brush the rolls with melted butter right when they come out of the oven. Enjoy!

# Tips

I highly recommend using a candy thermometer to test the warm milk/butter mixture to make sure that it’s not too hot or too cold. Remember it needs to reach 120 degrees. You want to make sure the yeast activates or you’ll be left with dense dough. Once you’ve made this recipe a few times you’ll be able to touch the milk mixture and know if it’s too hot for the yeast.

These would be a great addition to any holiday table or honestly any dinner!
