How to Make a Spicy Margarita

Spicy Margarita

Seriously, what better way to start off your weekend or night than with a refreshing Spicy Margarita?! This recipe is easy to make and one of my all time favorite cocktails.

I love making these when I’m hosting a girls night or even enjoying my night off after a busy day of work and mommying.

My favorite margaritas are on the rocks, spicy and made with fresh lime juice. That’s right, ditch that bottle of sweet n sour and make yourself a margarita that you really deserve.

What is a Spicy Margarita?

A spicy margarita is a cocktail made with Tequila, triple sec, spicy simple syrup and lime juice. Some margarita recipes include sweet n’ sour and are often served with salt on the rim of the glass. Margaritas can be blended, served over ice and made with different fruit juices or purees.

How to Make a Spicy Margarita

Ingredients

  • 1 ½ oz of Tequila
  • ½ oz Cointreau
  • 1 oz Spicy Simple Syrup
  • 1 oz Lime juice
  • Ice
  • Tajin, to rim the glass
  • Lime Wedge, garnish

For the Spicy Simple Syrup

  • 1 cup of sugar
  • 1 cup of water
  • 5 serranos, sliced

Directions

  1. First let’s make the spicy simple syrup. Add all ingredients to a small pot and heat on medium high heat until all the sugar is dissolved.
  2. Remove from heat and let it steep for 10 minutes.
  3. After 10 mins remove the chilis with a slotted spoon and pour the simple syrup into a glass jar or bottle and allow to cool completely. Keep refrigerated after use.
  4. On a small plate, add some tajin and set aside.
  5. Grab your glass and with a lime wedge run the lime around the rim of the glass then dip the rim into the tajin. Set aside while you make the drink.
  6. In a cocktail shaker add in ice, tequila, grand, spicy simple syrup and lime juice. Shake vigorously for 5-7 seconds.
  7. Add ice to the prepared glass and using a strainer pour the drink into the glass and garnish with a lime wedge. Cheers my friend!

# Tips

I love using silver tequila when making margaritas but use whichever style tequila you love. My favorite brands of tequila are Lalo, Espolon, Don Julio, Herradura and Corralejo.

I hate using sweet n’ sour for margaritas. They just don’t do the drink justice. Also I get major heartburn and probably the worst headache the next morning. Take the extra step and juice your limes. You’ll thank me later!

I love margaritas with fruit as well. So stay tuned for some upcoming margaritas, including frozen ones!
