How to Make Pineapple Agua Fresca (Agua de Piña)

Pineapple Agua Fresca

There’s nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than a tall glass of agua fresca, and this pineapple agua fresca is one of my absolute favorites! It’s light, naturally sweet, and bursting with tropical flavor — the perfect drink to cool off when the temperatures rise.

One of the things I love most about making aguas frescas is how easy and fun they are to prepare. My daughter loves helping me make them, and it’s become one of our favorite summer traditions. She normally isn’t a big fan of eating pineapple, but when we made it into a drink, she couldn’t get enough — I had to refill her cup twice!

If you’ve never made agua fresca before, it’s incredibly simple and a great way to enjoy your favorite fruits. Whether you use pineapple, watermelon, mango, or cucumber, these refreshing drinks should definitely be on your summer to-do list.

🌞 What Is Pineapple Agua Fresca?

Agua fresca (which translates to “fresh water”) is a refreshing, non-alcoholic Mexican drink made by blending fresh fruit with water, sugar, and sometimes lime juice. It’s light, naturally fruity, and perfect for pairing with any meal — especially spicy dishes!

This version, Agua de Piña or Pineapple Agua Fresca, is made with juicy pineapple, sugar, and water for a tropical twist that’s both sweet and tangy. It’s the perfect drink for picnics, barbecues, or just sipping by the pool.

🍍 How to Make Pineapple Agua Fresca

Ingredients

  • 1 large pineapple, peeled, cored, and chopped
  • 4 ½ cups water, divided
  • ¼ cup granulated sugar (adjust to taste)

(Optional: a few ice cubes and lime juice for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a blender, combine the chopped pineapple with 3 cups of water. Blend until completely smooth.
  2. Place a fine-mesh strainer over a large pitcher and pour the blended pineapple through it. Use a spoon to press the pulp and extract as much juice as possible.
  3. Add the remaining 1 ½ cups of water and the sugar. Stir well until the sugar is fully dissolved. Taste and adjust the sweetness as desired.
  4. Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes to chill. Serve over ice and garnish with a fresh pineapple wedge or a sprig of mint for a pretty touch.

💛 Tips for the Best Agua Fresca

  • For extra flavor, add a splash of lime juice or a few fresh mint leaves before serving.
  • You can swap sugar for honey, agave syrup, or cane sugar for a more natural sweetness.
  • If you like a smoother drink, strain it twice. For a pulpier texture, skip straining altogether!
  • Store leftovers in the fridge for up to 2-3 days — just give it a quick stir before serving.

This pineapple agua fresca (agua de piña) is one of the easiest and most refreshing drinks you can make at home. It’s a beautiful way to enjoy the sweetness of pineapple and stay hydrated all summer long.

Whether you’re hosting a backyard cookout, lounging by the pool, or just looking for something fresh and fruity, this drink is a must-try. It’s family-friendly, naturally delicious, and guaranteed to impress!
